My former professor extended the opportunity to design a poster for an event hosted by the Illinois State University Belonging and Equity Committee, allowing me to create something that reflected the event's spirit and its inclusive mission. I took on this project voluntarily, as it was a meaningful opportunity to contribute my design skills while supporting an initiative that fosters belonging and equity. I wanted the design to emphasize a sense of community, ensuring it visually communicated the idea of creating spaces where everyone feels valued and connected. Since the event was a video party, I incorporated a director’s clapperboard as the central graphic element, instantly tying the theme to film and media while making the purpose of the event immediately clear. The bold, dynamic imagery helped set the tone for a fun and engaging gathering while reinforcing the theme of togetherness.

In designing the poster, I also considered how to create continuity between this year’s event and the previous one while still making my design stand out. Last year’s poster prominently featured a film strip, so I aimed to take a different approach while maintaining a recognizable connection for returning attendees. By using the clapperboard instead of the film strip, I introduced a fresh visual element while keeping the cinematic theme intact. The result was a design that balanced familiarity and originality, making it both distinctive and meaningful for those who had attended before while being welcoming and engaging for new participants. Through this project, I not only contributed to an event that promotes inclusion but also strengthened my experience in designing for real-world initiatives, making it a valuable addition to my professional portfolio and resume.
